What to see in Murano

Murano glass artifacts | ID 35804004 @ Rafael Ben Ari | Dreamstime.com
Murano is perhaps the most famous of the lagoon islands-a truly enchanting place!
If already upon arrival one is amazed and fascinated by its colors, what makes this island world famous is the art of glassblowing.
Among its wonderful canals you can breathe art and craftsmanship: the techniques used here are handed down from generation to generation and have very ancient roots. That is why its approximately 4,000 inhabitants welcome tourists by showcasing what they love most: glass!
Indeed, it is unthinkable to come all the way here and not visit the glass museum, located inside Palazzo Giustinian. Past and present come together, through various art installations, both permanent and temporary, where you can learn the historical techniques of glassmaking, but also the most modern innovations.
Inside the museum, an eye is also turned to the future: in fact, the visitable section dedicated to the recycling of this material is very important.
Your journey inside the fascinating world of glass does not end here: have you ever heard of Santa Chiara? Perhaps the most fascinating experience to have in Murano consists precisely in a visit to the glass cathedral: a building dating back to before 1300, it was once a home of Augustinian monks and later of the Franciscan nuns of Santa Chiara.
Today the cathedral has been transformed, and inside it master glassmakers perform the art of glassblowing, offering enchanting demonstrations, so much so that the place is now known as the Glass Cathedral.
Not just glass! Murano is a most gracious island capable of enchanting its visitors also with its splendid buildings: are you wondering what else to find there?
First of all, you should devote some of your time to the Basilica of Saints Mary and Donatus: it probably dates back to the 7th century and preserves a wonderful Byzantine mosaic floor. But there is more inside: from Byzantine marbles to glass and the relics of St. Donatus, who, according to legend, killed a dragon with a sign of the cross.
Also very pleasant is the walk along one of Murano’s most important canals, called “Fondamenta dei Vetrai,” where, in addition to the splendid views of the water, you can also admire many typical handicrafts.
Concluding the Fondamenta walk, you’ll reach the Renaissance church of San Pietro Martire: built around 1300 and then rebuilt in 1511 after a fire destroyed it, it houses incredible works of art by the likes of Veronesi, Bellini and Tintoretto.
And if you are an art lover, you must also visit Santa Maria degli Angeli, for which it is essential to make an appointment to gain access: here you can find a wonderful altarpiece by Pordenone.
Finally, in addition to a must-do tour along Murano’s Grand Canal (yep, being a Venice in miniature, the main canal here has the same name!) and a look at the island’s marble lighthouse, you must also admire the Palazzo da Mula: its Gothic style dating back to the 12th century will leave you speechless!
This building, which was once a place where the nobility of Venice gathered during the summer, now hosts cultural activities and exhibitions.
What to see in Burano

Burano Canal with characteristic colorful little houses | ID 33513782 @ Stevanzz | Dreamstime.com
Burano is another beautiful island in the Venetian lagoon, and there are many attractions worth your time here as well! A bit smaller than Murano, it has about 2,000 inhabitants, making it an ideal place to take pleasant, relaxing walks among the colorful little houses reflected in the water.
Burano is also an important craft center, but we are not talking about glass: this island is famous for its lace! It is no coincidence that one of the must-see stops is the Lace Museum located inside the Lace School, inaugurated in 1872 by Countess Adriana Marcello, who wanted to revive this historical tradition of Burano: Venice, in fact, was famous for the lace that adorned the ladies’ fine dresses.
Once the school closed, the space was reused as a place for exhibitions and displays; today it is also possible to observe the techniques used by the lace makers to produce their works.
Always popular during visits to Burano is the Church of San Martino Vescovo: its peculiarity is that it lacks a main entrance; in fact, a side door must be used to gain access. This church dates back to around the year 1000 and preserves important works of art inside.
If you choose to plan a visit to Burano, you should not miss the island’s bell tower and market. The bell tower, called “crooked,” stands just behind the Church of San Martino Vescovo and was built in the 17th century. Historically, the tip of the belfry housed an angel, but after it fell due to a storm, now stands an iron cross.
Do you know why it is called crooked? Because due to the uneven ground, as a result of subsidence, it is tilted on its axis by just under two meters! The market, on the other hand, is always located near the church: various stalls located on a square where you can find the perfect souvenir to take home.
The market is held in Galuppi Square , and it is always in its vicinity that you will find the most interesting sights: here you will be able to admire the lace-making, the museum, the church of San Martino Vescovo and even the Town Hall, as well as a statue of Galuppi himself by the artist Barbaro and a very old stone well dating back to the 500s.
For a proper visit, it is necessary to reach the Three Bridges: it isa wooden bridge from which enchanting photographs are taken. In fact, it is here that the most colorful streets of Burano intertwine and the little houses are reflected on the water giving breathtaking views; not to mention that here you will find the highest concentration of little stores and restaurants.
To conclude the list of Burano’s most interesting attractions, two buildings must be mentioned: the house of Bepi and that of Remigio Barbaro.
Bepi was the name by which Giuseppe Toselli was known, a man beloved by the Buranelli people who used to spread a white sheet and project cartoons for the children; his house is the most colorful on the island and is characterized by peculiar geometric shapes.
Remigio Barbaro, on the other hand, was a Franciscan sculptor who asked to leave his house as it was even after his death: inside you will find all the poet’s artistic activity.
If you are curious to discover this pearl of the Venetian lagoon, read the guide on how to get to Burano.
What to see in Torcello

The island of Torcello | ID 124602489 | Burano © Sergio Simoes | Dreamstime.com
It is the smallest island and is almost uninhabited, but it attracts many tourists. Are you curious about what you can find in Torcello? First of all, the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta with its bell tower.
The Basilica dates back to the 7th century and is appreciated both architecturally and for what it holds inside: in fact, it is a wonderful example of Byzantine architecture, but above all it houses a very important and splendid mosaic cycle, The Virgin and Child and the Last Judgment, splendid works of art that attract many art lovers and more.
The bell tower, on the other hand, is very popular since you can climb to the top and enjoy an incredible view from a height of over 40 meters! You will also be able to see the Baptistery attached to it, although only ruins remain of the 7th-century original.
Also located next to the Basilica is the burial place of the matron of Torcello, namely the Church of Santa Fosca, also in Byzantine style though Venetian influences. The island of Torcello also has its own museum: in this case, you can trace the island’s history through a journey built around artistic and archaeological finds.
On this small island you can also find an incredible find: the throne of Attila, the scourge of God! There is actually no historical basis as to whether this stone seat was actually used by Attila, yet it attracts so many tourists every year that no one leaves the island without having immortalized the throne.
But this is not the only legend of Torcello: do you know the Devil’s Bridge? If you decide to take the walk in the direction of the Basilica you will come across a pretty little stone bridge to which several legends are linked.
Some tell of a tragic love story, others speak of a witch, but the most popular one says that it was the devil himself who built the bridge after it had twice collapsed, in return, however, he would take possession of the first soul to cross it? How about you? Are you superstitious or will you have the courage to go over it?
In Torcello you will be able to visit the Locanda Cipriani, an inn equipped with a ristornate that has become a symbol of elegance and prestige that has hosted patrons of the caliber of Hemingway, Callas, Diana of England, and even Queen Elizabeth inside !
Finally, I recommend that you spend some time at the Andrich House Museum, home of the two artists Lucio and Clementina Andrich. Here you will find their works, but that’s not all: a naturalistic oasis between the lagoon and vegetable gardens that offers a visit enhanced by the presence of the couple’s grandson, capable of giving unique tidbits and anecdotes for the most passionate and curious.
Frequently asked questions
To visit the three islands of the Venice lagoon requires at least half a day, even if that means carrying out a quick and not a complete visit. For a truly rewarding experience that allows you time to explore the lagoon, it is advisable to devote a full day to these islands.
The only cost you will incur to access the islands is the vaporetto fare; there is no entrance fee. However, there are very advantageous complete packages that already include travel and admission to various museums and attractions found in Murano and Burano. There is also a Pass that can be used for both the vaporetto and other means, with varying duration and prices, a recommended choice should you prefer to move independently.
Obviously, it is not possible to give an objective answer to this question-personal tastes are essential to make a judgment. Certainly, both Murano and Burano are always highly appreciated by their visitors and it is difficult to regret choosing them as a destination. Murano is especially appreciated for its demonstrations of techniques in glassmaking, while Burano fascinates with its lace technique and its beautiful colorful little houses overlooking the canals.
It is absolutely worth visiting Torcello! All of its visitors return home with fond memories of what is a truly authentic corner of the Venetian lagoon capable of telling the story of the city’s origins: a peaceful destination in which to appreciate a serene atmosphere between history and some curious legends, such as those of Attila’s throne and the Devil’s Bridge.
The vaporetto is the fastest way to get to Burano from Murano, and the journey time is about 25 minutes
