From where the vaporettos leave for Torcello

To reach Torcello, simply take the vaporetto that leaves from Venice: there are two points from which you can depart.

In fact, the boats set sail from the Serenissima from Fondamenta Nuove and from San Zaccaria. There is one line that directly connects the city to Torcello and that is line 12.

This vaporetto stops at the main islands, including Murano and Burano: the journey time is about 50 minutes and a vaporetto departs every 30 minutes.

Line 12 reaches Torcello only until 9:15 a.m. and after 6 p.m., otherwise you’ll have to change at Burano and get on waterbus number 9.

If you arrive at Santa Lucia station and want to get to Torcello right away, however, take the rapid line number 3 to Murano and then line 12.

Alternatively, you can choose the 4.2 or 5.2 to Fondamenta Nova and then the 12 line again to Torcello. Of course, depending on the time of day you may need to change at Burano.

If you wish to visit Torcello, or the islands of the lagoon more generally, there are a few steps you can take to make your trip more comfortable.

First, choose your departure time well: it is advisable to leave early in the morning to make the most of your day and be able to visit the entire lagoon, perhaps with a single vaporetto pass.

Also, leaving early in the morning will allow you to avoid large crowds of tourists and queues to board the vaporetto.

The trip to Torcello takes about 50 minutes, but you can also consider getting off first at Murano or Burano and then reach Torcello.

The island famous for its colorful little houses is just 5 minutes from Torcello, and you can move from one to the other using line 9.

A good idea is to leave very early and visit Murano and Burano before the influx of many visitors expected in the late morning, then move to the quieter Torcello later.

Another option, however, is to take advantage of the early morning line 12 to reach Torcello directly and only then move with line 9 to Burano.

The cost of the vaporetto is quite high and especially the duration of a ticket is 75 minutes: at the price of 9.50€ it will be possible to travel for an hour and a quarter.

Considering the length of the route and the time to devote to the island, it is practically impossible to take advantage of a single ticket to get around on the way back as well.

However, I have great news for you! There are passes of various durations that allow you to travel as many times as you want and at a very affordable price.

The price goes up depending on the duration you choose and ranges from a minimum of 24 hours up to a maximum of seven days with prices ranging from €25 up to €65.

With passes offered by Venezia Unica or the company itself, you can use both the vaporetto and other means of transportation: the lido, regional and fast regional buses in the municipality of Venice.

I recommend you buy your pass online in advance if you plan to visit the lagoon including all its islands: you will reduce the expense and optimize your time!
